Our first experience was with the Urucará Sustainable Fruticulture project. Supported by the German Federal Government through SEQUA as part of the Developpp.de program, the project main focus was to work with local small producers from the Agrofut cooperative, located in Urucará, Amazonas, with the aim to enable this group to maintain and improve their organic guarana production and to also help them diversify their product range (including açaí, acerola and tonka beans to their portfolio), in order to secure and increase their incomes.
Actions such as developing biological pest control methods, installation of irrigation systems, and the plantations of Cumaru trees to produce Tonka Beans were consolidated. An integrated pilot farm was set up with fish farming combined to açaí and acerola production as well, allowing the fishes to be partly fed with overripe berries and the enriched water from the basins could be used to irrigate and fertilize the crops, therefore contributing to maintain and develop their agro-ecological system in Amazonia.
Beginning of the project: January 2016
End of the project: January 2018
