Piqui oil: multipurpose and tradition of a people

Date

Native from Brazil, Piqui is a fruit rich in fatty acids and carotenoids and vitamins A and C. It is found in different regions of the country like in the Caatinga, Amazon and Atlantic RainForests, being most predominant in the Brazilian Cerrado, the second largest Brazilian biome.

Piqui is known as the “Ouro do Cerrado” (Cerrado’s Gold) because of the prevalence of the fruit and its uses, raging from being a principal ingredient in cooking, cosmetics and natural medicine in the form of vegetable oil, and due to its economic importance for families in small communities that work with the harvesting and transformation of the fruit.

The production of the piqui oil is something constant in the reality of the regions where the fruit is harvested. The harvest of the pequi happens mostly in preserved areas, and as result of the tree being native and having a long period of germination, the cultivation is not common, making the extractivism the form of harvest most used.

The piqui oil provided by Ingrenium comes from a community of producers that has more than 50 years of experience with the process. The production of oil in the region is a cultural staple, and most producers learned the making of the oil with their family.

We have been collaborating with this group of small producers from Ceará, in the northeast of Brazil, to offer authentic piqui oil. Every step of the process of oil extraction has been documented and monitored. In 2022, in collaboration with our partner Nat’Organico, we helped them obtain the organic certification, maintaining our responsibility of always keeping 100% of traceability and quality of our products.
